Backwoods Maple Syrup is a family run maple syrup producer near Coldwater, Ontario, proudly operated by the Partridge and Vandergeest families.
In 2006 Backwoods Maple Syrup began with just 40 pails and an outdoor fire, and by 2013 quickly grew to include a custom-built wood & propane evaporator, supporting over 2,000 taps on 20 acres. In 2023 Backwoods Maple Syrup purchased a 120 acre sugar bush and constructed a brand new sugar shack. We added 3,400 new taps and installed a brand new vacuum system. 2023 also included a very special project with HGTV personality, Bryan Baeumler, for his new series, Bryan's All In. With his help, we designed and renovated the interior of our heated sugar shack to include a welcome desk, storefront, coffee bar and much more. *As seen on HGTV's Bryan's All In "All Tapped Out"* |
...a little history...
The original sugar shack is located on the Vandergeest family farm. Cor Vandergeest started making syrup on the ‘syrup farm’ using an outdoor fire and flat bottom pan in the spring of 1968. The Vandergeest family farm has always been divided into two properties, the ‘home farm’ and the ‘syrup farm’ separated by Anderson Line. Cor & Marie Vandergeest purchased the ‘home farm’ in May of 1957 and the ‘syrup farm' in the spring of 1966. The property had previously belonged to the Brookings family and the Langman family, both of whom made maple syrup. |
